Tips for getting better creative for presentations with an AI content generator

Understanding what AI can and cannot do

AI is a powerful tool when used thoughtfully and effectively. Here are a few tips to optimize AI for your next presentation:

Starting Point – Personally, I use AI to get the creative juices flowing or when I’m blocked. Type in a question you’re struggling with and watch as your screen fills with ideas and content. (Confession: I used ChatGPT when I started this blog.)

Accuracy – AI is fast and convenient, but it’s not always right. It pulls data from various sources on the internet, so always sift through the AI conversation, fact-check, and verify the information presented before including it in your presentation.

AI Question – How you phrase your question or input will affect your response. Rephrase your question a few times and in different ways to get more creative content to choose from. Also, be nice to your AI. Adobe reports that only 4% of people who use AI for image creation include the word “please” in their prompts.

Human Input – Use AI to supplement your message, not replace it. AI does not provide nuance or personal touches. Those are still very much in the human domain, and that is what makes you, your voice, and your content creation unique. It’s what makes it interesting.

Imagery – AI-generated images and videos are getting better every day, but they are not branded. Just because something looks good doesn’t mean it’s branded. For a company, branding is critical – graphics, colors, fonts, logos – to marketing. Make sure that the imagery you use in your presentation clearly represents your company’s brand image.

Ethics and Ownership – AI pulls from everywhere, regardless of copyright or licensing limitations. As part of fact-checking, make sure you have the rights to use that text or image. It’s easier to do with images, as a Google image search will warn you, “Images may be subject to copyright.” With tools like Adobe Express, which can generate unique images based on your prompt, you need to carefully read the terms of service. Usually, Adobe grants users a license to use AI-generated creative content. Getty Images also grants licenses for digital presentation use. You can access it through the Shufflrr Plugin for PowerPoint. Regardless of where you source your images, be aware of ownership.

Beware of Bias – This is ironic because you might assume that an algorithm is completely objective. However, algorithms are programmed by people with their own biases. Additionally, language learning models (LLMs) feed on existing conversations, which are also biased. Don’t passively accept the information; rather, review it as you would a debate – critically, with an open and inquisitive mind.

Directed AI – The best way to control the quality and accuracy of AI-generated creative content is through subscription to a directed AI service focused on your own data set. Directed AI will exclude random information from the web and will focus only on your company’s data set, which is internal, compliant, accurate, and branded. This requires an upgrade to a paid version with some configuration.

Free AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gamma are great for suggesting broad, general creative content. They can generate nice-looking graphs and imagery. However, they are not always accurate or even relevant, and they lack nuance. Those are still up to you, the creator of content and presenter to your audience. It’s the human touch that will ultimately connect you with your audience and help you sell. No LLM or technology will replace our humanity.
