Slide into the future: How Gen Z is revolutionizing PowerPoint presentations

Just like flip phones, Converse All Stars, and ankle socks, Gen Z has a knack for reviving what once seemed outdated—and PowerPoint is no exception.

As the first generation to rely on computers for the majority of their schoolwork, Gen Z often completed and submitted homework in PowerPoint. But with the rise of Google Slides and Canva, Microsoft PowerPoint began to feel like my father’s (that is, Gen X’s) app. Ugh!

That was then, this is now. PowerPoint remains the most creative and robust presentation app available, offering an infinite combination of animations, effects, art, and integrations with other platforms. Its Designer panel provides numerous design options for your slides, making it easy to create a stunning presentation.

Like it or not, Gen Z has been digitally raised and wired. So why not make it a party? A recent Wall Street Journal article, Nothing Says ‘Party!” to GenZ Quite Like a 50-Deck PowerPoint and a Remote Clicker, highlighted the trend of Gen Z bringing PowerPoint decks to parties instead of dessert or wine. (Personally, I’d opt for the wine—a red cabernet paired with a piece of rich, dark chocolate. But I’m Gen X.)

Gen Z’s approach to PowerPoint presentation design is shaped by their digital nativeness, preference for quick and engaging content, and emphasis on visual communication.

Here are some trends in PowerPoint design and usage that resonate with Gen Z—and can be adopted by anyone, regardless of generation, to create an outstanding presentation deck:

1. Minimalist and Clean Design:

  • Gen Z favors simple, uncluttered slides with plenty of white space. They prefer minimal text, relying more on visuals to convey messages.

2. Bold and Vibrant Colors:

  • Bright, bold colors are popular among Gen Z, reflecting their desire for eye-catching and energetic designs. They often use color blocking and contrasting hues to make slides stand out.

3. Use of Visuals Over Text:

  • This generation leans heavily on visuals like images, infographics, and icons rather than long paragraphs of text. Digital assets such as memes, GIFs, and short video clips are often integrated to keep the audience engaged.

4. Interactive Elements:

  • Gen Z likes to incorporate interactive features in their PowerPoint presentations, such as clickable links, embedded polls, and QR codes. This engagement allows for a more dynamic and participatory experience.

5. Storytelling Focus:

  • They tend to structure their PowerPoint presentations as narratives, using storytelling techniques to make their points more compelling. This often includes a clear beginning, middle, and end, with a strong emphasis on emotional connection.

6. Integration with Social Media:

  • Gen Z frequently incorporates elements from social media into their presentations, like Instagram-style stories, TikTok-inspired video content, or social media screenshots. They may also share presentations via social platforms.

7. Custom Illustrations and Icons:

  • Custom, hand-drawn illustrations or unique icon sets are preferred over standard clip art, giving PowerPoint presentations a more personalized and modern look.

8. Use of Modern Fonts:

  • Typography is key for Gen Z, with a preference for modern, sans-serif fonts that are easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. They might mix and match fonts to create a unique style.

9. Short and Snappy Content:

  • PowerPoint presentations geared towards Gen Z often feature brief, concise content. Slides are kept short and to the point, reflecting their shorter attention spans and preference for fast-paced content.

While technology and trends may evolve, the fundamentals of a great presentation—good design, impactful speech, and confident delivery—remain timeless. Gen Z’s approach is a refreshing reminder that, with the right tools and creativity, anyone can craft a PowerPoint presentation that captivates and inspires, no matter the generation.
